Federer withdraws from Roland Garros─── MORGAN PIEK 09:00 Mon, 07 Jun 2021
The 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, has withdrawn from the French Open being played at Roland Garros.
The Swiss Master has enjoyed limited tennis over the past 17 months after having undergone surgery to his knee twice.
On Saturday evening the 39-year-old won a gruelling four-set match against Germany's Dominik Koepfer to reach the four round of the clay court Grand Slam.
Federer admits that the 3rd round tie was exhausting both physically and mentally.
“After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation it's important that I listen to my body and make sure I don't push myself too quickly on my road to recover.
“After discussions with my team, I've decided I will need to pull out of Roland-Garros today.
“I am thrilled to have gotten three matches under my belt. There is no greater feeling than being back on court.”
Federer has indicated that he will focus on Wimbledon, which has won a staggering eight times.
