The Swiss Master, Roger Federer, is through to the quarter-finals for a record 18th time in his illustrious career after beating a determined Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in straight sets.

Federer, who turns 40 years old in August, has reached the last eight on four more occasions than the two-time champion, Jimmy Connors, of the USA.

Even more amazing is the fact that Federer has entered Wimbledon 22 times, meaning that on only three occasions he has failed to make at least the quarter-finals.

On Monday, Sonego put up a stern challenge, however, Federer, was flawless in his execution and provided for some thrilling tennis on what is to be the last "Manic Monday" as we know is, due to the fact that from next year the first Sunday at the Grand Slam will no longer be a rest day.

Federer managed to win the fourth-round tie 7-5, 6-4 and 6-2.

Following the match Federer expressed his delight in advancing, especially seeing that the game was interrupted by rain and this led to a delay as the centre court roof takes some time to close.

“I’m extremely happy. Again, tricky conditions – inside and outside – against Lorenzo who is always dangerous but I felt that after that first set, I was able to control things.

“It was a great match and I couldn’t be more excited to be in the quarter-finals.

“It’s a big moment and I’m very, very happy.”

Federer will have to wait until Tuesday to see who he will face in the quarter-finals. The match between Poland's Hubert Hurkacz and Russia's Daniil Medvedev was suspended due to the rain with each player having won two sets. The match was evenly balanced at 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 and 4-3 in Medvedev's favour.

In the confirmed quarter-finals Novak Djokovic will face Márton Fucsovic, Karen Khachanov takes on Denis Shapovalov and Matteo Berrettini will be up against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
