Djokovic wins a sixth title at SW19─── MORGAN PIEK 07:57 Mon, 12 Jul 2021
The world number one, Novak Djokovic, has won the men’s singles at Wimbledon for a sixth time in his career to take his tally to a record-equalling 20 Grand Slams.
On Sunday Djokovic came back from a set down to beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3, to equal Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s records of 20 Grand Slam singles titles.
Djokovic is on track to become the first men’s singles player in the open era to claim a calendar Grand Slam after winning both the Australian and French Opens earlier in the year.
Following his win at SW19, Djokovic said that he has become a better player over the years and he has a better understanding of how to cope with the pressure associated with big matches.
“I am a better player in all areas. The journey that I've been through has been very rewarding for every segment of my game and also my mental strength, the experience, understanding of how to cope with the pressure in the big moments, how to be a clutch player when it matters the most. Just the ability to cope with pressure.
“The more you play the big matches, the more experience you have. The more experience you have, the more you believe in yourself. The more you win, the more confident you are. It's all connected. Obviously it's all coming together.
“In the last couple of years, for me, age is just a number. I don't feel that I'm old or anything like that. Obviously things are a bit different, and you have to adjust and adapt to your, so to say, phases you go through in your career. But I feel like I'm probably the most complete that I've been as a player right now in my entire career.”
On Saturday, Australia’s Ashleigh Barty won the women’s singles.
