Nadal withdraws, Harris to face Lopez in Toronto─── MORGAN PIEK 13:36 Wed, 11 Aug 2021
South Africa’s leading men’s singles tennis player, Lloyd Harris, will no longer face Rafael Nadal on Wednesday at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion and Harris were set to face each other for a second time in the space of a week, however, Nadal has withdrawn due to a foot injury.
Last week, Harris stunned Nadal with a 6-4, 1-6 and 6-4 win during the 3rd round of the Citi Open.
The King of Clay, Nadal, confirmed that he will be returning to his native Mallorca to deal with the injury.
“I’ve had this issue for a couple of months. It is not a happy situation after all the success that I had here in Canada.
“I need to go back to Mallorca and try to find a way to be better again. With this pain, I’m not able to enjoy playing.
“I believe that I am not able to compete at the level that I need because the foot doesn’t allow me to move the way that I need.”
Harris will now face the 39-year-old Feliciano López of Spain in the 2nd round of the ATP1000 event.
This match will get underway at approximately 17:00.
