Olympic champion too strong for Harris─── MORGAN PIEK 08:07 Thu, 19 Aug 2021
South Africa’s Lloyd Harris has been knocked out of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati by Germany’s Alexander Zverev.
Harris started the second-round match strongly to force the game into a first-set tiebreaker.
However, the third-seeded Zverev made light work of the second set to beat Harris 7-6 and 6-2.
Harris’ service game in the first set was on song and he dropped just five points throughout, but the reigning Olympic champion, Zverev, converted with two mini-breaks in the tiebreaker.
The win was also the first for Zverev at the tournament in seven years of being unable to advance past his first match.
In the post-match interview, Zverev admitted that he was nervous at the start of the game but is ultimately happy to earn his first win at the tournament in seven outings.
“I'm happy with how I am, I'm happy where I'm at and I'm happy to get my first win in seven years here.
“It's obviously a great start to the week.
“It's great. When I came on court and they said Olympic gold medalist, it did give me goosebumps.
“It made me a little nervous at the beginning of the match, I have to say because it is a special feeling.”
Zverev goes on to face Argentina’s left-hander, Guido Pella, in the round of 16.
