Harris to face tough Khachanov in US Open 1st round─── MORGAN PIEK 09:45 Fri, 27 Aug 2021
South Africa’s Lloyd Harris couldn’t have asked for a much tougher opening round match at the US Open in Flushing Meadows.
The 24-year-old South African has been drawn to play against the upcoming Russian star Karen Khachanov.
The 25th seeded Khachanov is the Olympic silver medallist, after losing in the Tokyo final to Alexander Zverev.
Harris said he is feeling prepared and confident going into the final Grand Slam of the year.
"I think it’s been a really good season and achieving a career high is a big deal for me, so I’m trying to climb the rankings and improve even more.
“I’ve never felt this good going into a Grand Slam.
“I’m playing with a lot of confidence, and I’ve beaten some top players recently, so I’m going in there with a lot of optimism.
“I’m just looking to keep playing good tennis”.
Kevin Anderson has been drawn against the world number 89, Jiri Vesely, of the Czech Republic.
The main draw of the US Open starts on Monday.
