In an epic final that has been dubbed as the "Miracle in Melbourne, against Russia's Daniil Medvedev, Nadal came back from two-sets down to win the year’s first Grand Slam for just the second time, and the first time in 13 years.

After a marathon final of five hours and 24 minutes, Nadal won the slam with a 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, and 7-5 win.

The 35-year-old Nadal said that this ranks after one of his more special wins.

“I know it’s a tough moment, Daniil. You’re an amazing champion. I’ve been in this position a couple of times trying to have the trophy with me.

“It has been one of the most emotional nights in my tennis career, and to share the court with you is just an honour.

“For me, it’s just amazing. A month-and-a-half ago I didn’t know if I’d be back and today I’m back here with you holding this trophy.”

On Saturday, Ashleigh Barty became the first Australian in 44-years to win the women’s singles with a 6-3 and 7-6 win over the USA's Danielle Collins.
