Harris knocked out early at the Madrid Open─── MORGAN PIEK 07:34 Tue, 03 May 2022
South Africa's leading men's single player, Lloyd Harris, has stumbled once again in the first round of a tournament on the ATP Tour.
Yesterday, the 25-year-old Harris was knocked out of the Madrid Open in Spain in the round of 64 with a straight-sets defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Davidovich Fokina managed to convert two of the three breakpoints he earned against Harris.
The 22-year-old Spanish player beat Harris 7-5 and 7-6 at the clay-court event.
Earlier in the season, Davidovich Fokina caused a big upset when he beat the world number one, Novak Djokovic, at the Serbian Open.
Last week Harris was beaten 6-3 and 6-4 by Carlos Taberner at the Estoril Open in Portugal.
Harris has not entered the doubles for this week in Madrid.
The latest defeat comes as a blow to Harris’ preparations for the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros. It’s the fourth time that Harris has been beaten in six clay-court events this season.
The 2022 French Open in Paris begins on Sunday 22 May.
