Eight of the country’s top tennis schools will be in action for Thursday in the annual Amanda Coetzer Tennis Tournament in Bloemfontein.

The tournament is hosted each year at Hoër Meisieskool Oranje and the winner of the event can claim the bragging rights as the unofficial top tennis team in the country.

The event makes a welcome return after it was not played the two previous years due to Covid-19.

The other team competing this week are - Rhenish Girls’ High School (Stellenbosch), Hoërskool Waterkloof (Pretoria), Hoërskool Menlopark (Pretoria), Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof (Stellenbosch), Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria, Hoër Meisieskool Paarl and Paarl Gymnasium.

The renowned tennis coach, MC Olivier, told OFM Sport that this year the tournament while be very open and any of the eight teams can win, but Oranje can at least make the semi-finals.

“My predictions - I would probably think that Rhenish Girls’ High, Oranje, Bloemhof and Paarl Girls' High will be in the semi-finals. On the day any of these four teams can win.

“I think that Waterkloof, Affies, Paarl Gym and Menlo might be a little bit thin. I don't think they necessarily have the depth.

“They are all going to be tight matches.”

Bloemhof has won the tournament a record thirteen times, while the hosts Oranje as well as Waterkloof have won the prestigious event four times each.
