Alcaraz credits serve for first round win─── MORGAN PIEK 07:52 Tue, 28 Jun 2022
The teenage sensation, Carlos Alcaraz, of Spain was made to work hard on day one of the Wimbledon being played in London.
The 19-year-old survived a big scare in his first-round game against Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in a five-set thriller on Court 1.
Alcaraz needed 4 hours and 11 minutes to beat the big-serving German 4-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 and 6-4 to advance to the second.
Alcaraz served 30 aces in the match and it often got him out of a tight spot in the game.
The teenager felt that his service game should be credited for the win.
“I didn't expect to move as well as I did today,” said Alcaraz.
“I mean, I played really well, I felt really well playing on grass and I still don't know how I served today.
“This is probably my best match serving. That's why I won today - the server, for sure.”
The fifth seeded Alcaraz will face the winner between Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands and Fabio Fognini of Italy in the second round.
