Fiery Kyrgios into SW19 semi-finals─── MORGAN PIEK 07:49 Thu, 07 Jul 2022
The Australian player, Nick Kyrgios, is through to the final of Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
Kyrgios beat Cristian Garin of Chile 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6 to reach semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time.
The 27-year-old Kyrgios said he is delighted to reach the last four of a slam, especially after having lost the love for the game a couple of years ago.
“How things can change,” said Kyrios.
“There was a point where I was almost done with the sport. I posted this year about the mental state I was in in 2019 when I was at the Australian Open, with self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
“I had thoughts in the last year-and-a-half whether I wanted to play anymore. Lost the love, lost the fire, lost the spark. Then some things just changed in my life.
“I rediscovered that a lot of people want me to play. I've got a lot left in the tank. I'm probably playing some of my best tennis, mentally feeling great.
“To be a semi-finalist at Wimbledon is a special accomplishment for anyone, but especially for me. I just sat there today and soaked it all in. At the same time, I feel like I don't want to stop here either.”
The fiery Australian will face Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile in the women's singles, Simona Halep reached the semi-finals with a straight-sets win over Amanda Anisimova of the USA, and Elena Rybakina needed three-sets to beat Ajla Tomljanovic.
