“I played with my heart and gave my all in yesterday’s match and unfortunately, due to a medial meniscus tear in my right knee, my team and I had to make a tough decision after careful consideration and consultation.”

The 24-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic, is out of the French Open being played at Roland Garros in Paris.

Djokovic has pulled out of the clay-court Grand Slam because of a knee injury he picked up in the marathon five-setter against Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina on Monday night.

Djokovic was set to face Casper Ruud on Wednesday in the quarter-finals, but the seventh seeded Norwegian has been given a walk-over into the semi-finals.

Djokovic confirmed that because of a meniscus tear the decision was taken to withdraw from the Grand Slam.

“I am really sad to announce that I have to withdraw from Roland Garros,” said Djokovic.

“I played with my heart and gave my all in yesterday’s match and unfortunately, due to a medial meniscus tear in my right knee, my team and I had to make a tough decision after careful consideration and consultation.

“I wish the best of luck to the players competing this week and sincerely thank the incredible fans for all of the love and continued support.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday in the women’s singles quarter-finals, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, will face Jasmine Paolini of Italy, while Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will face the Russian, Mirra Andreeva.
