Swiatek wins fourth French Open title─── ILSE SMALBERGER 16:38 Sat, 08 Jun 2024
It was always going to be an uphill battle for the little Italian, Jasmine Paolini, and in the end, it proved a bridge too far against the world number 1, Iga Swiatek
Poland’s Swiatek beat the Italian 6-2, 6-1 to become only the third woman in the Open era to clinch three straight French Open titles.
Swiatek had to eliminate world number 5, Marketa Vondrousova and world number 3, Coco Gauff to proceed to the final, while Paolini had to dispatch world number 4, Elena Rybakina and newcomer Mirra Andreeva, who dispensed with world number 2, Aryna Sabalenka.
Swiatek won the toss and elected to serve and broke the Italian’s serve twice to take the first set 6-2 in 35 minutes. Incidentally, Swiatek has never lost a French Open match after winning the opening set and this time would prove no different.
Swiatek dominated in the second set and led by 5 – 0. Paolini served and managed to avoid the bagel by winning the set 5 – 1. But in the end, it was a formality for the Pole, who easily won the second set 6 – 1.
The match lasted an hour and eight minutes and Swiatek became the youngest player to win three consecutive titles at Roland Garros since Monica Seles.
