A young woman seeking advice on a dress for her upcoming school formal received an unexpected response after thinking she sent photos to a friend.

Student Sydney Uselton meant to share images of her wearing the gown to a peer, but instead they ended up with Tennessee man Tony Wood.

What happened next was a completely unpredictable chain of events. 

Tony Wood, a father-of-six, received the text and was immediately cautious in how he should respond.

'Society puts a lot of pressure on these young women to have a certain look and a certain body build,' Tony told Daily Mail Australia.  

'We try to teach our children to be themselves and not worry about what others think ... Even with that, my young daughters already express a desire to 'fit in' and I figured this young lady might need that reassurance'.

Tony replied with a photo of his children to deliver their verdict on the dress. 'But the kids and I think you look stunning in your dress!' he wrote.

'My wife wasn't home so I couldn't get her opinion and I assumed that the children thumbs upping her would accomplish that substantially better than some overweight middle aged bald guy,' Tony said. 

Tony then attached a photo of five of his children giving a 'thumbs up', but missing from the photo was his four-year-old son Kaizler.

The photo found its way to Twitter and brought attention to the Wood family's Facebook and GoFundMe page.

Observant twitter users noticed Kaizler was missing from the photo because he was in hospital undergoing chemotherapy to treat leukaemia.

The GoFundMe page had been set up to raise funds for the cancer treatment.

Kaizler was diagnosed with Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in late 2015.

Nearly 600 people have donated over $15,000 to the cause.

Tony was stunned by the support the family received from strangers. 

'Wow. This is nuts! It's crazy!,' he said on his Facebook page.  

'I got a message from some random number the other day with a couple of pictures of a young lady in a dress.

'I decided, 'Let's make this person's day.' So I had the kids thumbs up her and told her she looked stunning in her dress. Now, all of the sudden, my kids are Twitter famous! Pretty cool!,' he wrote.  

'It's a bigger blessing than anyone could ever know'.  

'I think the internet is going to make sure you guys can focus on what matters! Hope he recovers quickly and fully,' one donor wrote.

'Proof that a little act of kindness can reap bigger acts of kindness,' wrote another.
