• 1959: Dr D.F. Malan (84), SA Premier (1948-1954), dies in Stellenbosch.
• 1990: Political Organisations are unbanned in Transkei.
• 1979: Figures released by the South African Institute of Race Relations indicate a fall of twenty per cent in political trials in 1978, compared with 1977. Authorities are showing increasing recourse to preventive detention rather than administrative banning of opponents.
• 2005: Fake versions of the new South African banknotes have hit the streets barely a week after the latest currency was released by the Reserve Bank.
• 1976: World's largest telescope (600 cm) begins operation (USSR).
• 1986: Haiti's President-for-Life Jean-Claude Duvalier flees to France Henri Namphy becomes leader of Haiti.

• 1907: Daniel Ferdinand (Danie) Bosman, pioneer and composer of light Afrikaans music, is born. He died on 27 May 1946, in Muizenberg, Cape.
• 1961: Jane Fonda made her acting debut in the NBC drama "A String of Beads".
• 1974: Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" opens in movie theatres.
• 1979: "Supertrain," TV Anthology, Superbomb of 1979, debuts on NBC.
• 1984: Michael Jackson awarded a 4-ft-high platinum disc by CBS.
• 1987: Madonna's "Open Your Heart," single goes #1.
• 1994: 21st American Music Award: Whitney Houston wins.

Sports:
 
• 1999: South Africa beats the West Indies with 50 runs in the seventh one-day cricket match at Centurion Park, to clinch the series 6-1.
• 1962: Sam Snead wins LPGA Royal Poinciano Plaza Golf Invitational.
• 1986: US female Figure Skating championship won by Debi Thomas.
• 1988: Nancy Lopez wins LPGA Mazda Golf Classic.
• 1989: Tennis superstar Bjorn Borg, apparently attempts suicide in Milan.
