
The 20th anniversary of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) in the Northern Cape will be commemorated on Thursday, 23 May 2024, at the A.R Abass Stadium in Kimberley. This milestone celebration will also feature the launch of the EPWP Phase 5 and a certification ceremony .

About EPWP
Since its inception in 2004, the EPWP has created over 14 million work opportunities, transforming the lives of millions of young South Africans. The programme focuses on providing employment and training to those who struggle to find jobs in the formal economy, thereby addressing poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Phase 5 will continue this legacy by emphasizing education and vocational training to further develop the nation’s skills base.
Key achievements:
1. Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme
- Four training intakes over three years.
- The latest graduating group began in January 2018 with 23 female participants, 21 of whom successfully completed the program in fields like Diesel Mechanics, Fitting and Turning, and Electrician. Many are now employed in the formal sector, including one working abroad.
2. MERSETA Artisanship Programme
- Initiated in April 2019 with a grant from the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MERSETA).
- 34 artisans trained in Diesel Mechanics, Refrigeration Mechanics, and Riggers, with a significant impact on youth employment.
3. Entrepreneurship Development Programme:
- Aimed at supporting local contractors to boost the economy.
- In April 2024, 30 women contractors from Frances Baard District were trained in business concepts and construction management, with 27 successfully completing the course and receiving certificates.
