Civil Aviation Authority to investigate hijack alert on SAA plane─── 08:07 Tue, 16 Jul 2013
Johannesburg - The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is awaiting a report from South African Airways (SAA) before it can investigate a hijack alarm signal on one of the carriers aircraft yesterday.
Flight SA346 from Cape Town was stranded on the tarmac at OR Tambo International Airport for 40 minutes after landing, with police then boarding the craft to verify the pilot's identity.
A passenger said armed police officers were standing at the entrance to and outside the aircraft, along with a handful of police vehicles and a fire truck.
SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said there was no attempt to hijack the plane.
He said the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) received a hijack alarm signal from the plane, and informed the police of a possible hijack situation.
Phindiwe Gwebu, spokesperson for the CAA, said once they received the report from SAA they would investigate the situation further.
