Bloemfontein - A school teacher is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court in connection with an international child pornography syndicate.

The man, who is in his sixties, was granted bail of R2 000 on 16 August.

He is one of six men arrested in four provinces for alleged involvement with the syndicate.

The other five were a lawyer, a dermatologist, a businessman, a teacher, and a retired school principal.

The syndicate was uncovered by an organisation based in Canada.

The South Africans were arrested following a year-long probe by Interpol and the police's cyber crimes unit.

Police spokesman Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale was quoted in reports stating that more arrests were expected as there were 50 suspects.

It was not yet known if South African children were used in the making of the pornography.

The accused were arrested in Lichtenburg, Bloemfontein, White River, Douglasdale, Florida, and Potchefstroom.

Police raided several homes in various provinces in August.

Among the items seized were 672 dvds, 22 memory sticks, eight laptops, two computer tablets, 39 external hard drives, and 25 books containing child porn pictures.
