#OFMElectionWatch: Holpan, Barkly West residents remain resolute to disturb voting | News Article

Residents of Holpan at Barkly West in the Northern Cape have remained true to their word to disturb the voting process at voting stations as one way of expressing their discontent with the services offered by the local government in the area.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa's provincial manager in the province, Elkin Topkins, told OFM News that police have opened the centre and have also threatened to arrest anyone from stopping voters to participate in the election.

Meanwhile, OFM News’ Pulane Choane reports that the IEC in the province is warning those who intend to stop voters from participating that there may be harsh consequences for doing so.

Topkins also said that there was a heavy police contingency at the Holpan voting station and that residents of that community who intended on intimidating those who intend to vote would suffer heavy consequences as the IEC, in conjunction with the police and the Department of Justice and Correctional Services, as well as the National Prosecuting Authority, have protocols in place to ensure that offenders are prosecuted faster than they normally would.
