NW Health spends billions on overtime─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:32 Mon, 20 Sep 2021
Two of the biggest departments - Health and Education - in Central South Africa has spent billions on overtime payments to staff.
According to the Department of Public Services, the money was spent on overtime payments as part of the government’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a parliamentary reply to whether the department has developed norms and standards for the payment of overtime in the Public Service, Minister Ayanda Dlodlo says overtime work is informed by the service delivery requirements of a department and that each department must have an approved overtime policy in place.
Her report indicates that the Health and Education Departments are amongst those that spend a lot of money on overtime remuneration.
Whilst Dlodlo’s report does not indicate how these departments allocated funds for overtime, it indicates that the North West Education Department spent more than R20 billion in the last two financial years, following KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
