The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Northern Cape will this morning kick-start the local government elections by processing applications for special votes.

The IEC in the province will open only 621 out of 728 voting stations, in order to conduct home visits to process 32 000 applications.

The IEC's provincial spokesperson, Elken Topken, says the commission has engaged 1 058 officials to conduct the voting processes of elderly and disabled people, amongst other individuals.

Topken says indications are that they will complete the processing of home visits by lunchtime tomorrow.

These 621 stations will also be kept open to allow those who include essential workers who applied for station visits to cast their votes as well.

OFM News reports that approximately 623 000 registered voters in the Northern Cape are expected to cast their votes during the Local Government Elections on Monday at one of the hundreds of voting stations managed by the IEC. There are 728 voting stations across the province, stretching from Port Nolloth, down to Sutherland, Colesburg and up to Heuningvlei.

OFM News previously reported that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is on Saturday expected to deploy thousands of soldiers onto the streets of cities, towns and small villages across the country.

A portion of the 10 000 soldiers will be deployed to cities such as Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Mahikeng, among others.
