Bloemfontein - The Central University of Technology Ixias will be playing in next years’ Varsity Cup after beating former All Black coach John Mitchells’ UKZN Impi 35-26 in the final of the Varsity Shield in Bloemfontein.

The Ixias ran in four tries to three to win their third Varsity Shield title in a final which was tighter than the score suggests.

Coach Skillie Bester told OFM Sport that although they’ve had fun in the Shield, it’s time to prove themselves with the big boys now.

Bester once again reiterated the importance of their promotion for Free State rugby…
Meanwhile, the University of the Free State’s Shimlas U20 side beat Tukkies U20 in the final of the Varsity Cup Young Guns tournament.

Shimlas won the match with a kicking competition after the scores were tied at 17-all after extra-time.
