• 1932: SA experiences a monetary crisis as a result of the heavy drain of gold from the country.
• 1985: Six people are killed in a bomb explosion outside a bar in Durban.
• 1988: The Star reports that according to the Advisory Group on AIDS in SA, a total of 191 cases of AIDS have been diagnosed by mid-December 1988, while 113 people have died.
• 1961: Fidel Castro announces Cuba will release 1,113 prisoners from failed 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion for $62M worth of food & medical supplies.
• 1968: 1st US case of space motion sickness.

• 1951: Dorothy Ruth Boxall, music teacher and lecturer, writer and organiser of orchestral activities for the youth, dies in Johannesburg.
• 1980: Four Black newspapers, Post Transvaal, Saturday Post, Sunday Post and the Sowetan, are banned on a technicality on the same day that the eight-week strike of Black journalists ends.
• 1776: Thomas Paine writes "These are the times that try men's souls".
• 1938: Margaret Hamilton's costume catches fire in filming of "Wizard of Oz"
• 1966: Britain's rock TV show "Ready Steady Go" last program.
• 1973: "Young & Restless" premieres on TV.

• 1913: James Middleton, SA cricket player (1895-1903), dies.
• 1957: Test Cricket debut for Wally Grout & Bobby Simpson v South Africa.
• 1981: Geoff Boycott becomes leading run-scorer in Test Cricket with 8033.
• 1994: Baseball owners impose salary cap, fiercely opposed by players.
• 1997: Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson is quickest to reach 500 wins (682 games).
