Afasa speaks about current pressing issues | News Article

Livestock diseases, farm evictions, and the availability of land for farming, are some of the pressing issues that the African Farmers Association of South Africa (Afasa) are currently grappling with.

Afasa’s Secretary-General, Nakana Masoka, further says the organisation is participating in the development of the agriculture and agro-processing masterplan which they hope will be able to take the agricultural sector to better heights.

He adds that while they are concerned that government comes up with a new master plan each year, instead of seeing it to fruition, they hope that the master plan will be the bible of agriculture and rural development and that it will guide the necessitation of the country’s economy.

Mosaka says the organisation is currently mobilising farmers in general as well as its members to organise themselves into commodity study groups in their provinces. He says this is to enable these individuals to identify the areas in which they need support in, as well as to allow Afasa to direct opportunities to specific commodities.

He adds that women and youth support in agriculture are one of their main focus points. This is to ensure sustainability and continuity. “Our experience is that the women throughout the years have been the ones who produce food, who tilt the land, and who ensure that there is a stable livelihood,” says Masoka.

Those who would like to become a member of Afasa can visit their website and fill in the form, or link up with district Afasa leaders.
