The Agricultural Produce Agents Council (APAC) has requested clarity after new, amended regulations, which stated that gatherings at auctions are not permitted until 11 July 2021, were published in the Government Gazette on Sunday. The regulation further adds that this provision will be reviewed after the stated date. Francois Knowles, registrar of APAC, says that the council will inform all livestock agents of the outcome if it is different to the current interpretation. He says that all livestock auctions are to remain closed until the 11th of July 2021. Knowles’s statement comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday evening that the country will be moving to an adjusted lockdown level 4. This decision was made after the country saw a surge in the number of new daily positive Covid-19 cases, with Gauteng being the hardest hit by the current third wave of infections.

Foot-and-mouth disease-affected municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal have been declared disease management areas.  The Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, made this announcement on Wednesday. The minister stated that this is government's effort to prevent a further spread of the disease from the affected areas. The movement of cloven-hoofed animals, their products and genetic material into or out of the affected areas is not allowed, except on authority of a permit issued by the Veterinary Services of the area. To date, 12 positive locations have been identified and placed under quarantine. A number of suspect locations were also identified through clinical investigations, and trace-back/trace-forward exercises, including a commercial feedlot.
