The Automobile Association (AA) will approach Parliament to find out why the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s announcement on record high petrol prices was kept to the last minute on Election Day, which was last week Monday.

This comes as farmers and agricultural organisations, along with many other concerned South Africans, have spoken out against high fuel prices.

On Wednesday, already financially strained South Africans started paying R1.21 more for a litre of petrol, R1.48 more for a litre of diesel, and R1.45 more for a litre of paraffin.

The announcement was reportedly made by the aforementioned department late on Monday evening as many citizens approached the final hour of voting on Election Day.

The AA is of the view that the release was delayed to protect the “incumbent government” from any backlash.

According to the AA, the statement from the department was dated for release on 28 October but was only issued on 1 November.

A spokesperson for the AA, Layton Beard, explains the impact of the fuel price on burdened South Africans on the OFM Business Hour.
