Creative duo opens NWU Gallery exhibitions for 2026─── 09:00 Tue, 24 Feb 2026
The NWU Main Gallery presents Because We Are, a collaborative exhibition featuring the evocative works of South African artists Tony Luza and Daniel Tladi.
Centred on themes of humanness and mutual care, the exhibition runs until 20 March 2026. Because We Are engages with African ethical frameworks that position humanness as inherently relational.
Curated by Sheryl Msomi, the exhibition invites the public into a space where empathy, community, and shared dignity are explored through visual storytelling.
Both artists recently joined Yolanda Maartens on the OFM Art Beat to discuss the personal experiences behind their work and a longstanding friendship that informs their creative dialogue.
Beyond the individual
In a world that often feels increasingly fragmented, where the “self” is prioritised over the “us”, Because We Are offers a powerful reminder: we are only truly human through our connection to others.
Celebration of relational ethics
More than just an art exhibition, Because We Are serves as a philosophical inquiry. Drawing deeply from African ethical traditions, the collection frames humanness not as an individual pursuit, but as something rooted in our interdependence.
The exhibition title gestures to the belief that human flourishing is tied to collective responsibility and mutual care.
In an era shaped by global capitalism and digital isolation, the artists ask: what happens when we centre empathy, generosity and reciprocity?
Two artists, one vision
While Luza and Tladi share a grounding in African philosophies of humanness, they bring distinct visual styles to the gallery floor.
Tony Luza explores the duality of human connection. Through layered textures and symbolic forms, his work reflects on how our relationships can be both fragile and resilient. For Luza, empathy and reciprocity are the vital threads that bind the fabric of society.Tony Luza, Let us Dream Big, 2025 on display at the NWU Main Gallery. Photo supplied
Daniel Tladi turns his gaze to the everyday. His work foregrounds the small, ordinary acts of care that sustain communal life. Using mixed media and painting, he transforms these gestures into powerful visual narratives that affirm shared dignity.

Together, their work creates a dialogic space – a visual conversation that invites viewers to reflect on care as an ethical imperative rather than an afterthought.
Setting the tone
The NWU Gallery has long served as a creative haven at North-West University, and this first exhibition of 2026 sets a resonant tone for the year ahead. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply seeking a moment of reflection, Because We Are is a timely reminder that our existence is a shared condition.
