OFM Business Hour: Sharing the recipe for successful food festivals | News Article

As the youth of South Africa venture into different sectors to make a living, Melusi Thobela, founder and CEO of Deluxe Grills, believes food festival events will help increase the rate of employment.

The 23-year-old has been selling food from his food truck in the streets of Bloemfontein while also organising the ‘Deluxe Fest’ food festival. He will be collaborating with Matt Foodbar on opening a new outdoor restaurant on 4 February 2023. Thobela says that he will organise more food fest events during the year; however, he feels that more support from local municipalities will contribute to making these events a success.

"I believe if the public sector can support the private sector, more opportunities will arise and the two sectors can help increase the rate of employment," he adds. Thobela explains that more businesses would actually open and run successfully if the public sector would assist.

Many food businesses are struggling to set up stalls for events because they are unable to get their health certificates, which allow one to be a vendor at events. "Someone could have a successful food business, but because they do not have their health certificates, they are unable to set up their stalls at food events, and the certificate in question can only be received from the municipality," says Thobela.

He further explains that one needs to put together a team of experienced individuals, ranging from the people who will handle the marketing of the event, to the people who will manage the safety and security of the event. "But what is mostly important when arranging any type of event is your target audience. Our theme for the latest food fest is Mexican and Premium Grills – which are steaks and wings," Thobela adds. He says all of these food events are day events that are created to inspire a passion for food. "We aim to give patrons a day filled with great music and great food, which will be served by different vendors."

He believes social events built around food can help with the current rate of unemployment as equipment has to be hired for these types of events. "We usually hire equipment from multiple providers, from production to sound, to catering and branding the event," adds Thobela. He concludes that when putting together a successful event, one has to work hand in hand with other businesses.

"Working together helps other businesses get their name out there while earning money for the services they have provided for us."
