The business of Valentine’s Day─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 17:03 Wed, 15 Feb 2023
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, OFM Business Hour spoke to two local business owners, florist Sharon Folkey from Cross Country Flowers - who has been in the business for over 20 years - and the owner and founder of A Long Table, Motheo Morgan.
The business of flowers in the City of Roses
Folkey says Valentine's Day went well for her business. "More people went for red roses this year, and at the end of the day, all the red roses were sold out."
She noticed a change in consumer behaviour: in previous years, people would buy extras to go with the flowers, like balloons and chocolates, but for this Valentine’s Day, people focused on buying flowers only.
"The popular choice for the day was roses, some went for a mix of colours, some went for white, but a lot went for the red roses," says Folkey. She concludes that service has been the key to the success of her business.
"Service is the key to your business because if you do not offer your services, your business will not succeed."
The business of dining with love
A Long Table is set to host A Valentine’s Long Table on Saturday 18 February 2023 where lovers and friends can celebrate love together while dining on dishes prepared by Morgan and his team. He starts off by explaining that to him, Valentine's Day means reassurance, a day whereby people get to show and give reassurance to their loved ones.
"Because food brings people together and love is a communal thing, A Valentine's Long Table was founded on the premise of bringing people together over food.
"The event will house various people in one community with one presiding emotion, which is love," he explains the theme of the day.
Morgan says that it took him about two months to plan for the event, as he wanted to take everybody on a journey of love with great food, drinks and music. 10 people will be employed to assist on the day in question: a photographer, two musicians, four waiters, two kitchen staff, and a cleaner.
"What I have learned from organising these events is that one must have patience because it takes a while to grow a business," he concludes.
