Sasco at UFS demands answers | News Article

All registration centres at the University of the Free State have been suspended following a protest at the Bloemfontein Campus yesterday.

According to the South African Students Congress (Sasco) Branch Chairperson, Asive Dlanjwa, all points of registration will remain shut down for as long as the management of the university has not headed to their call.

The organisation, amongst others, demands that the university address some of the challenges faced by students. These include addressing their concerns over NSFAS-funded students who are allegedly expected to settle their outstanding fees prior to registration, increased fees and cancellation of provisional registrations. Dlanjwa told OFM News that they are awaiting the outcome of the meeting that is currently underway with the university’s financial task team in charge of evaluating their demands, and will soon chart a way forward. He, however, maintains that should they not reach common ground, registrations set to commence on the 25th will be disrupted.

Meanwhile, Sasco is expected to meet with NSFAS tomorrow (Friday) to discuss university registrations. They have stated that they will make institutions of higher learning ungovernable if students who cannot afford to pay registration fees are turned away.
