IEC hopes for smooth sailing today─── 09:20 Sun, 27 Jan 2019
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged communities not to interfere with those wanting to register to vote.
eNCA reports that several voter registration centres were shut down by protesting residents in Krugersdorp.
They say the government is failing to deliver basic services.
The IEC said while it respects the right of residents to demonstrate, it's urging communities not to interfere with those who want to register to vote.
The commission also revealed that there were disruptions at 140 venues yesterday, including Bloemfontein, Sasolburg, Rustenburg and Barkly West.
Voter registration continues today at various stations countrywide.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs says more than 19,000 smart ID cards and green books were collected on Saturday.
The department had announced that its offices will open from eight to five on both days.
They are still encouraging people to collect their IDs.
