NW Health MEC calls for relocation of dumping site near Mahikeng Hospital─── PULANE CHOANE 08:49 Tue, 29 Jan 2019
The MEC of Health in the North West, Madoda Sambatha, is calling for the relocation of a dumping site which lies right in front of the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital.
According to the departmental spokesperson in the province, Tebogo Lekgethwane, this follows after the Department received numerous complaints from residents in the Majemantsho, Danville and Lomanyeng communities, who are in close proximity to the dumping site and are affected by it.
Lekgethwane said the provincial department had recently fenced the area around the site to keep residents from using it as a dumping ground, however, this has not kept them from using the area further. He also said following Sambatha's most recent visit to the hospital, the MEC is now concerned with how the matter will affect the health and safety of patients, following swarms of flies which now lurk in the area and potentially carry disease. Another problem is the stench from the garbage lot, which has affected the users of the hospital and nearby communities.
Sambatha is now calling for the municipality and all the affected stakeholders to urgently intervene in relocating the site. Talks between the MEC and the municipality and local authorities will ensue.
