NW second most affected by farm attacks: AfriForum─── PULANE CHOANE 09:37 Wed, 30 Jan 2019
Civil rights group, AfriForum, revealed that the North West is the province second most affected by farm attacks in 2018.
This is according to the group's Ian Cameron, who stated that the province trails behind Gauteng, which is the worst affected by these attacks as it had recorded over a 116 farm attacks in the last year. Following Gauteng, is the North West, which experienced 74 farm attacks during the last year.
"The worst province for the year was Gauteng, obviously, also because people are far more concentrated in Gauteng, then also North West was the second worst one in the country, Mpumalanga was third and then Limpopo was the fourth one.
"After that we, see the Free State and the Eastern Cape almost equal with 32 and 31 attacks reported and once again, the Northern Cape is relatively low compared to the rest of the country," said Cameron.
These figures form part of an analysis which was done by the group's community safety department. It is reported that overall, there were about 432 farm attacks and 54 farm murders during 2018. While the group said the 2018 figures showed a decrease in farm murders, they also pointed to a rise in farm attacks. This suggests that although the farm attack problem is getting worse, farmers are becoming better at defending themselves.
