Locals do their bit for #WorldCancerDay | News Article

The Hennenman Bowling Club in the Free State had a cancer awareness fundraiser on 2 February, ahead of World Cancer Day.

The president of the Hennenman Bowling Club, Abraham Venter, told OFM News about the importance of the initiative and how they came together to do their bit for the cause. “It is actually the first year we’ve launched it and it was quite a big success. What we did was get people from the local community to participate,” said Venter. He added that they formed bowling teams of four which consist of two people who belong to the club and two people who have had cancer or have been affected by it. “We had various fundraising initiatives such as the spraying of hair and people made donations,” he added. The total amount of money generated by entry fees was donated to the CANSA association.

According to the statistics on the worldcancerday.org website, more than a third of cancer cases can be cured. Another third can be cured if detected early and treated properly. Commemorated annually on 4 February, World Cancer Day is an initiative by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). The day is aimed at encouraging people to educate themselves about cancer in order to do away with the fear, myths, and misconceptions that surround the medical condition. It is also a day that stresses the importance of early detection and reducing your exposure to risk factors such as environmental pollution and tobacco, among others.

This year’s World Cancer Day campaign titled #IAmAndIWill is a call for people around the world to do their part in creating awareness. Public figures around the world are making pledges on social media to rally support for the cause.
