DA NC refers Gamagara Municipality to SAHRC over Olifantshoek water crisis─── PULANE CHOANE 15:43 Fri, 08 Feb 2019
The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape has referred the Gamaraga Local Municipality to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) following the water crisis in Olifantshoek which left residents without water for close to a month.
This comes as OFM News earlier reported that the spokesperson of the municipality, Kamogelo Semaimai, refuted allegations that the crisis was caused by the municipality's impending debt to the Sedibeng Water Board but rather by a "technical issue". OFM News' Pulane Choane reports that the political party's Andrew Louw has resorted to this step owing to the fact that this matter has been going on for more than just 28 days...
Louw said that there has in fact been an ongoing water crisis in the municipality for over five months, with residents in the municipality and its surrounding towns going without water for weeks at a time. He further claimed that the mayor of the municipality denies that there is a crisis and the recent violent protests which took place in Olifantshoek were the results of the residents reaching a boiling point with the situation as the municipality was not providing them with the answers they needed from it.
Meanwhile, Semaimai said while the municipality admits that it owes over R14 million to the water board, he insists that water was not cut off owing to the debt but rather because of a water pump that was being repaired. He said that on Wednesday, the water board began pumping water to the municipality again and the reservoir was steadily filling up with water again. He further said the municipality apologises to the towns affected by the water crisis and the health risk locals may have been exposed to because of it.
