An Eskom transformer located between Welkom and Virginia was hit by lightning and erupted in flames on Sunday afternoon.

Eskom spokesperson, Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg, tells OFM News that transformer four of the Anglo Dankbaarheid Substation was completely destroyed by the fire and an adjacent transformer was damaged in the incident. Jansen van Rensburg says only the mines in the area were affected by the damage. Transformer four is believed to have had about 15 000 litres of transformer oil.

The Eskom spokesperson says power supply to the mines was restored just after nine in the evening. They are assessing the damage done.

According to reports, the Matjhabeng Fire Department responded to the call just after 17:00, but was unable to extinguish the fire due to a shortage of water. A private fire company was called in to assist and managed to extinguish the fire just before 19:00 in the evening. The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is yet to comment on the incident and the alleged absence of water in the fire truck.
