Centlec leaves Bfn tavern in the dark following death of three | News Article

Power utility, Centlec, has cut off the power supply to a Bloemfontein tavern after three people died in an apparent electrocution incident at the weekend.

Centlec spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, says the power utility’s team conducted preliminary investigations into the incident on Sunday, February 10. He says the investigations indicated that due processes were not followed when electrical wiring was done at the establishment which is located in the Rocklands suburb. Mamatu says the tavern in question and some of the surrounding properties appeared to not have the process done by an accredited electrician, something they find disturbing. According to Mamatu, there were loose wires at the establishment and some of the plugs had many connections, which worsened the situation further. He says the power utility had to shut off power, because the property was a danger to people as proven by the unfortunate incident.

Not only has the power supply been cut, but the owner has been issued with “a Stop Work Notice as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act”, says Mamatu. The power utility extended its condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.

Reports indicate that the deceased touched a steel gate on the property on Saturday evening, February 9, as they were leaving and were electrocuted. Provincial Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Sipho Towa, confirmed the incident. It is believed that two of the victims were declared dead on the scene, while the third received medical attention. The third person thereafter succumbed to injuries. Local police are yet to confirm the details surrounding the incident and indicate if a case has been opened.
