Stage 3 load-shedding to be implemented; strike's impact a risk

Stage 3 load-shedding to be implemented; strike's impact a risk | News Article

Eskom has announced that Stage 3 load-shedding will be implemented on Wednesday. Load-shedding will begin from 8am-11pm.

The power utility says the load-shedding is because of a result of a shortage of capacity due to a number of generating units that are out of service due to breakdowns.

Some generating units returned to service on Tuesday but Eskom said it's still running low on emergency water and diesel reserves.

Eskom has also raised concerns about the risk of their operations as a result of Wednesday’s planned national strike by labour federation union Cosatu.

“We have activated contingency measures in the event that employees participate in the strike action and should there be further on our operations,” Eskom said.

“However it is important to note that in terms of Section 77(1) of the Labour Relations Act, only employees who are not engaged in an essential service or a maintenance service have the right to participate in the strike action.”

Stage 3 calls for the shedding of 3, 000 megawatts on a rotational basis, nationwide.

Eskom is appealing to residents and businesses, urging them to cut back on power.
