Members of various unions in Welkom, Free State, have joined one another in high spirits and song as part of a national one-day strike organised by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).
This, as the trade union federation mobilised hundreds of thousands around the country, including teachers, in a bid to place pressure on the government to do something about the high unemployment rates. OFM News' Pulane Choane reports from Unitas Secondary School in Welkom that close to about 200 members of these unions will now march to the city's central business district.
OFM News earlier reported that that Secretary of the Union in the Province, Monyatso oa Mahlatsi said following the march, the unions will hand its memorandum of demands to business owners at the CBD, with hope's that they will employ locals in the city, to reduce unemployment in the province.
Today's march forms part if a nationwide initiative which comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced that national power supplier, Eskom, will be split the utility into 3 entities. The federation says Ramaphosa's decision, which he made during his State of the Nationa Address earlier this week, threatens the jobs of thousands of it's members. Other unions also taking part in the protest include the South African Democratic Teacher's Union (Sadtu) as well as the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
