#COSATUNationalStrike's march in Welkom in full swing | News Article

The march of the Cosatu national strike is in full swing in the mining city of Welkom. Members of the federation and its affiliates are marching from Unitas Secondary School to the Central Park to hand over their memorandum of demands.

They are protesting against increasing job losses in the country and looming retrenchments at Eskom following president Ramaphosa's announcement to split the utility into three entities.

The federation says Ramaphosa's decision will do nothing but threaten jobs of thousands of its members. Members of the union partaking in the march told OFM News that the President and the ANC at large need to understand the plight faced by workers and the impact their decisions might have on the man and woman on the ground. A number of them vow that should their call fall on deaf ears it would mean "no vote for the party".

Some of the employees at the local Matjhabeng Municipality said their jobs are not secured and they are not pleased with their working conditions.

Benny Ramongalo who is also an employee at the municipality said he is in support of the nationwide strike because he has not been paid since last year November and fears he might lose his job.

They are hopeful that the march will grab the attention of the government and for employers in the private sector to prioritise employees and improve their working conditions.
