The University of the Free State have started engaging in talks with various stakeholders to improve the safety of students, both on and off campus.

According to Rector and Vice-Chancellor of UFS, Francis William Petersen, the university is working closely with police and security companies to put different safety measures in place to ensure that students are safe at all times. He added that they are aware that some students do not have access to internet and stay on campus until after dark in the computer labs and this is when they are targeted.

He also said that the UFS has approached the Mangaung Metro Municipality to enforce stricter bylaws.

This comes just days after the lifeless body of a 23-year-old UFS student was found by students walking to class in Willows, Bloemfontein.

Police spokesperson, Wendy Nkabi, told OFM News that the body did not have any visible injuries and that an investigation will be taking place.

The incident follows months after a 20-year-old law student from the University of the Free State (UFS) was fatally stabbed on his way from a Tavern in Ella Street, which is also in the Willows area.
