14-year-old murder accused appears in NW court | News Article

The 14-year-old Grade 5 learner who has been accused of fatally stabbing his peer at the Mateane Primary School in Diretsane village, North West, made his first appearance.

The teenager appeared at the Atamalang Magistrate’s Court in Mmabatho on Wednesday afternoon as he faces charges related to murdering a 13-year-old grade 5 learner at the school on Tuesday after an altercation ensued between them.  The two learners cannot be named as they are minors. OFM News’ journalist, Pulane Choane, reports that the case has been postponed to tomorrow.

The police spokesperson in the North West, Sam Tselenyane, told OFM News that the reason why the case was postponed, was to give the teen’s family a chance to try to get him legal representation from the state. OFM News had earlier reported that details surrounding the incident were sketchy, however, it's believed that the two boys asked their teacher to use the bathroom and moments later there was an altercation outside the class, which resulted in the death of the 13-year-old learner as he was allegedly stabbed in the chest.

The suspect will remain at the Bosasa Child and Youth Care Centre until his next appearance. Meanwhile, the provincial education department went to the school on Wednesday, together with the provincial social department to provide counselling to those learners at the school who may have witnessed the murder, as well as to the teachers and school staff affected.
