Mohapi’s death made national news headlines in November last year as CCTV footage of the man’s murder in his car at the Commando Shopping Centre’s parking lot went viral. Two men approach the car and fatally shoot him before pulling him out of his vehicle and driving off with it. Mohapi’s alleged killers remain behind bars and police have made no new arrests.

The spokesperson for the police in the Free State, Stephen Thakeng, told OFM News that the four suspects that were arrested in connection with the murder remain in jail and face charges of murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They will appear at the Welkom Regional Court on Monday 11 March. Meanwhile, Thakeng also said he would not be able to speak on whether his death may be related to illicit mining in the area, as Mohapi was the Chief Safety Officer at the Sibanye-Stillwater mine in Welkom.

Following his death, the Chairperson of the Committee, Sahlulele Luzipo, called the police in the area and province to double their efforts in their quest to root out criminality in the mining sector in that area.
