ANC takes risks with their top 100 list - analyst | News Article

The ANC’s top 100 list of politicians who will be deployed to parliament might have some repercussions for the party ahead of the May 8 elections.

This, as a number of individuals implicated in state capture have been included on the list. According to a political analyst from the University of the Free State, Sethulego Matebesi, it was expected that the likes of Bathabile Dlamini, Malusi Gigaba, former Free State Agriculture MEC and Mineral Resources Minister, Mosebenzi Zwane, as well as the embattled former North West ANC chairperson, Supra Mahumapelo, would likely be on the list. He says it was going to be difficult for President Cyril Ramaphosa to sideline the so-called controversial nominees on the list as they have massive support from party members and supporters. Matebesi, however, adds that the ANC’s Integrity Committee should have looked into state capture allegations against the individuals and it should have called them in to explain themselves. This would allow people to see that the party is serious about dealing with corruption and it would not have a negative impact on Ramaphosa’s new dawn.

He says, although there are corruption allegations against some of the selected politicians, the ANC is right to defend the nominees on the grounds that they have not been found guilty by the court of law.

Matebesi adds that the list, on the other hand, might not influence some of their supporters as a number of voters have already made up their mind on which party they are going to vote for.
