Free State IEC ready for May elections | News Article

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in the Free State has confirmed its state of readiness for the much anticipated May 8 elections.

Provincial Manager, Itumeleng Liba, has confirmed that 28 political parties will contest the elections in the province and are soon expected to sign the provincial code of conduct during the first week of April.

More than 426 000 voters have been registered in the Mangaung region alone. Liba said applications for special votes will be open from April 4 to 8, while the casting of special votes will take place on May 6 and 7.

Liba has confirmed that they don’t foresee major hiccups in the upcoming elections, except for bad weather conditions and load shedding.

He, however, confirmed that they are making provision for such circumstances and are certain it's all systems go.

Meanwhile, the commission has had its voters' roll certified, and nationally the number of eligible voters adds up to more than 26 million, which is an increase of more than 1.3 million compared to the number of people who registered to vote back in 2014.
