#VaalRiverProject: SANDF in Emfuleni despite unhappiness of municipal workers─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:10 Wed, 27 Mar 2019
Work to rehabilitate the polluted Vaal River continues despite unhappy Emfuleni municipal workers who disapprove of the presence of the South African National Defence Force at the treatment plants.
This after a presentation by the SANDF at Parliament’s Portfolio Committee sitting earlier this month revealed that workers and the community had staged a protest against the SANDF‘s presence.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Water and Sanitation department, Sputnik Ratau, tells OFM News that the disapproval of SANDF’s presence, by municipal workers and the residents of the area, does not really have an impact on the defence force’s work, because they were deployed there by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
OFM News previously reported that the Emfuleni Local municipality, and other Gauteng municipalities affected by the Vaal river pollution crisis, is working around the clock to acquire funds set to maintain and sustain the river. This follows after efforts by the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) to have the river rehabilitated after years of neglect and pollution. Ratau told OFM News that municipalities need to find or have qualified teams who will be able to take over the work done by the SANDF when it leaves the river at the end of December 2019.
