FS Cogta to help grieving mothers after quarry drownings | News Article

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in the Free State says it is looking for possible ways to compensate the grieving mothers who lost their children through a drowning incident in the Nala Municipality.

This, as one of the mothers whose child drowned in a pit, waged an attack on the municipality on one of the local radio stations in Bloemfontein in March. She accused the municipality of negligence.

Head of Cogta in the province, Mokete Duma, explains to OFM News that after hearing the mother on the airwaves he requested to meet her and see how she and others can be compensated.

He says the quarry is on the outskirts of the area and has been there for more 20 years after it was left unattended by contractors.

Duma says the municipality is, however, getting the necessary help to try and rehabilitate pit while also trying to attend to the grievances of the mothers.

Duma says the municipality did carry the cost of the funerals.
