SAHRC's Malema ruling continues to elicit anger─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 12:15 Wed, 03 Apr 2019
The South African Human Rights Commission’s findings into allegations of hate speech levelled against EFF Leader, Julius Malema, are continuing to elicit anger and frustration a week after the report was released.
The report, which legally exonerates Malema and another EFF member of hate speech, upholds the pair’s right to freedom of speech. The Commission received numerous complaints regarding six statements made by the pair between 2016 and 2018. These include one made in the North West province on June 16 by the controversial EFF leader, about Indians hating black people.
While the SAHRC chairperson, Bongani Majola, acknowledged the statements were offensive, he also pointed out that various Equality Court rulings on hate speech are not unanimous and therefore need more legal clarity on where the boundaries are.
The SAHRC is continuing to receive lashings from the public on social media platforms regarding the findings.
