Book on Magashule may not affect ANC at election polls - analyst | News Article
ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule

The new book titled “Gangster State: Unravelling Ace Magashule’s Web of Capture” by award-winning investigative journalist, Pieter-Louis Myburgh, may have very little effect on the ANC during the upcoming elections.

Over the weekend, Myburgh’s book was released, making headlines as he outlines Magashule’s alleged role in state capture and looting of the public purse during his tenure as the Premier of the Free State. Political analyst at the University of the Free State, Dr Sethulego Matebesi, says he believes that people will continue to vote for the ruling party despite claims made by Myburgh against Magashule, who now holds the position of Secretary-General of the ANC, which is one of the most powerful positions in the party.

Meanwhile, in an interview with OFM News, Myburgh said while he foresees that revelations he makes in his book may affect the ANC polls marginally, he says his aim with writing the book was not to decrease the ANC’s numbers, per se, but raise public awareness, particularly regarding Magashule’s influence on procuring various deals in the Free State. “My hope with this book is to challenge law enforcement agencies to look into the allegations made in the book then use them as a basis for criminal investigations… so that the law takes its course on those political figures who have been indicated in corruption and so that the public’s faith in the law is restored, especially in dealing with corrupt officials,” Myburgh said.

On Monday, the spokesperson for the ANC, Dakota Legoete, rubbished Louis-Myburgh’s book, which was released over the weekend as nothing but a coordinated, media attack on Magashule. Speaking on the matter, Magashule dismissed the allegations levelled against him by Myburgh and even hinted at taking legal recourse against the author and journalist. Myburgh said claims made by Legoete, that the release of his book is a well-coordinated attack against Magashule and the party ahead of the elections on 8 May next month, make no sense and welcomed Magashule’s legal threats. “I would not cry wolf then back up the information I provided in my book with facts,” Myburgh said. He further said how the party now deals with the allegations he levelled against Magashule in the book will prove as a litmus test on their seriousness in dealing with corruption in the country.

Over the weekend, Myburgh’s book was released, making headlines, as he in the publication outlines Magashule’s alleged role in state capture and looting of the public purse.

Political analyst at the University of the Free State, Dr Sethulego Matebesi, however, says he believes that people will continue to vote for the ruling party despite claims made by Myburgh against Magashule, who is the Secretary-General of the ANC and is also the former Premier of the Free State province.
