UPT airport evacuated as precaution | News Article

The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) says the evacuation that took place at Upington International Airport on Friday afternoon was initiated after an alarm went off during the repair on a computer server by IT personnel.

This as President Cyril Ramaphosa, and other travellers who were in the area, was affected by the delay due to the incident.

Senior manager, Senzeni Ndebele, says although there was nothing much to worry about, the airport had to take every precautionary measure in place.

She says during this incident there was a slight delay to outgoing flights due to the evacuation of passengers - half an hour.

Ndebele says no causality was reported after the whole incident and all is back to normal.

"There was nothing serious but we had to take precautionary measures and evacuate our passengers and everyone who was at the airport due to the alarm activation.

“Everything was actually back to normal on the same day on Friday so the airport is operating as normal and we were also able to facilitate the arrival and the departure of the president who was in Upington on Friday,” said Ndebele.

Ramaphosa was conducting an ANC election campaign in Upington on Friday.
